Newborn Photography Southsea | Harrison

Leanne and Tom got in touch last year looking for some visual documentation of the new stage in life they were approaching together. Leanne was in the nice, early stages of pregnancy so opted for a Bump to Baby session. The bump shoot happening in the studio in Bognor Regis and the Newborn Photography in their home in Southsea, Portsmouth.

Maternity bump photography Southsea_0001

As is the case of much of the bump photography I do, when capturing images of women in their fabulously pregnant state there is often various forms of lingerie and nudity on display. I rarely share those deeply personal and intimate images, but love walking away from a shoot having caught the U rated images too, as seen with Leanne and Tom above. The happiness, love and anticipation is evident. I have to add that that dress is one of the best, form fitting maternity dresses I have seen in a long while!

Leanne and Tom were due to welcome their new addition in the first week of January. Babies being babies, I was in a state of high alert from around Christmas. I needn’t have worried, after being 11 days late Harrison was born a whopping 8lb 9oz! I usually aim to do the Newborn Photography in the first 10 days of being born. After coordinating busy diaries and hospital appointments I was packing my car and heading off to Southsea to finally meet Harrison at 15 days old. Here he is snuggled into an old trugg, wrapped in a cosy scarf I had arm-knitted some time before.

Newborn photography Southsea_0008

What a lovely little man is Harrison. Leanne & Tom seemed to have taken to parenthood like ducks to water, doting on him with such love and affection. Leanne had also been busy buying cute little props to try out for his newborn photography session! This teeny turtle outfit was adorable, as is his teeny tiny frown!

Newborn photography Southsea_0009

As with all types of photography I do, be it weddings, bumps, newborns, portraits etc, I really love bringing as much of the subjects’ characters and personalisation into the imagery as possible. The image below shows Harrison sleeping in the plaster cast Leanne had done of her bump in the last few weeks of pregnancy; a pregnancy charm hanging off her bangle resting on a tiny foot during an embrace and a tender family moment with Tom while Leanne nursed Harrison, her wedding dress providing the back drop.

Newborn photography Southsea_0006

It was time for another outfit Leanne had sourced. A cute nappy cover and hat with ears combo that helped him look like a sleepy bear! Harrison did well being moved, dressed and repositioned for his shoot. He stayed nice and sleepy, albeit with the odd grumpy frown! Keeping the room really warm to keep him dopey had the adverse affect on us. Leanne and I were sweltering, opening windows for a breeze while Tom opted for a cheeky nap!

Newborn photography Southsea_0010

For the months before getting together for the Bump and Newborn Photography sessions, Leanne had been busy keeping me in the Pinterest loop, sharing her ideas and inspirations. She has a great eye for photography! I love being able to collaborate with individuals to create something they can cherish and love forever. Leanne had shared with me how she loved the close up, detail shots of newborn’s features which was great to know as I was also shooting images with a mind for how they may look in their finished album.

Newborn photography Southsea_0004

Both Leanne and Tom have an awesome tattoo collection. Pulling out the black backdrop for some low key images was a great way to showcase some of their body art. Harrison was just waking up too so all in all a perfect opportunity to capture those baby blues.

Newborn photography Southsea

After a few hours of costume changes, milk top ups, coffee fixes and naps, our time together had come to an end. Leaving Leanne and Tom to relax with Harrison, exhausted after their busy day, I quickly headed for my studio to get the images down and edited. For their album Leanne had opted for the soft textured Tintoretto pages Graphistudio has to offer. Perfect for newborn photography. Leaving the design and image choices to me, I quickly got to work. To keep the design subtle and classic I chose a white box with sky blue writing on the top. Inside the lid a striking image of Harrison, with the box covered in sky blue with white writing and a light blue ribbon to complete the look. After being handmade and printed in Italy, the book was on my doorstep within 7 days. Straight back out by post to Leanne and Tom. I was barely out of bed on the Saturday morning when I received the following message from Leanne, “Parcel has arrived. I’ve opened it, smiled at the card, sent a pic of the amazing box to Tom, opened up the first page with a huge smile, opened the second page and now I’m in tears. Thank you so much for capturing such beautiful pictures, I can’t thank you enough xxx”

Newborn Photography Southsea

It is such a joy for me to hear and see the impact it has on people seeing their images in print. Treasured memories to hold and cherish for years to come. I look forward to seeing Leanne, Tom and Harrison again in the future as their family grows. In the meantime, I will be squirrelling away creating visual memories for others to treasure.

Newborn Photography Bognor Regis | Elwood

About two and a half years ago I had the pleasure of doing a Bump to Newborn Baby Photography shoot in Bognor Regis for Gabi and Richard as they awaited, and then welcomed their (very) late arrival, Summer. As Summer had spent so long “inside” she was ready to stretch out and look around at her new surroundings, even christening my new crocheted pea pod prop with glee! Here’s a quick photo recap of those sessions…and the more peaceful moments:

newborn Photography Chichester_0001

Seeing Gabi, Rich and Summer prepare for their next addition has been great fun. Gabi’s parents were over from Brasil, her in-laws only round the corner and a little pocket of time booked out for me to swing by with the pop-up-studio ready to capture their new little man, Elwood, for his newborn photography session.

newborn Photography Chichester_0003

I had picked up this gorgeous metal trugg from somewhere a little while ago (it may even have been a local supermarket in their homewares dept), it was a lovely cream and eggshell blue which I knew would appeal to Gabi’s sense of colour and be a great starting prop for their little boy. Like his sister before him, Elwood wasn’t big on sleeping deeply through the shoot, so we had to be quick with each pose before he became unsettled, but he seemed quite comfy in the little grey blanket I had arm knitted myself some time before. I do love seeing those little hands and feet still crumpled and creased from their time in the womb, especially as the poke through soft textures and fabrics.

Another trugg, another pose…using one of my daughters favourite cushions (her ‘Lamby’ as she has named it!) and one of my favourite wicker baskets inspired me to capture some portraits with geometric shapes. I also wanted to experiment with a bold colour choice. I love the way, with a square constrain, the blue base frames the image:

newborn Photography Chichester_0007

During the shoot, Gabi’s parents had taken their grand-daughter Summer out for a walk to allow us some quiet time for image taking and coffee drinking (newborn photography is a very relaxed affair!). We remembered the last baby shoot and how Summer had managed to soil many props during the process. Oh how we laughed…..later we wished we had never mentioned it! Feeling lucky we removed Elwood’s clothes to settle him down for some naked poses. Boom, the baby heavens opened!! The photo below is showing a now-peaceful Elwood lying comfortably asleep in a nice warm squidgy mess that is thankfully hidden from view!! Maybe I should start a blog titled “The Secrets Behind Newborn Photography”!?!

newborn Photography Chichester_0010

After Elwood was washed and dry we decided to try out some low key shots for some black and white newborn photography. We had obviously got far too cocky with ourselves. I was still busy adjusting my settings, as a sudden burst of sunlight that had appeared from behind the clouds changed the lighting, when Elwood opened up again with a never ending stream that went everywhere….On Gabi, Richard, the floor, the backdrop and of course, himself! Quite sensibly we decided to knock the naked shots on the head and start working with some family time as Summer was due back any minute, but here is one quick shot from this downpour period that we managed to salvage:

newborn Photography Chichester_0006

After a quick food break for Summer and a feed for Elwood we took some family portraits. I am in love with Gabi and Rich’s oversized stripy armchair (yeah, I know, I have a thing for lines!!). It was a great spot to pop them in and benefitted from having a simple plain wall background to make it a feature. With natural sunlight pouring through the bay windows diffused by simple nets and a wriggly Summer eager to show off her baby brother, the natural ease of this family unit is clear to see.

newborn Photography Chichester_0002

Summer showed me her bedroom and reading corner where she shared some of her toys with Elwood. There was a lot of rolling around on the floor and easy distraction with all the fun things to play with, but it was a special moment when Summer plonked a quick kiss on Elwood’s head and he responded with a lovely smile.

newborn Photography Chichester_0005

As a parting gift to Gabi and Richard, there was a simple image I had taken of Elwood as he lay sleeping on the fluffy rug. As I am known to see things in pictures, all I could imagine was what Elwood was thinking of as he lay there. Armed with the print and a stack of Sharpie’s I found myself doodling these ideas on the image. Here is the original and the graffitied image before I framed it and presented it to them with their completed collection. Many congratulations Gabi, Richard and Summer, welcome to the world Elwood. I am really excited to see you all grow together in the future. xxx

If you feel inspired by the idea of a Bump to Baby shoot, or even just a Newborn Photography shoot to capture those precious moments while your new addition is so teeny and small, please do get in touch. Here are some more samples of my baby shoots to get your imagination flowing. I am based in the Chichester / Bognor Regis area, but I do travel further afield. I look forward to hearing from you.

Inspired for 2016

As 2015 drew to a close and the New Year came in, I’ve been following many people’s offerings of their “Best of 2015” posts. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think it is a lovely way to cap off the year, but during November and December my feet barely touched the ground!! For this reason, as soon as the school term ended I shut the door to my studio and focused on relaxing with my family, playing games with my children, watching a ton of Disney movies and hanging out with my husband….oh, and lets not forget training our crazy puppy too! Writing a blog, or even reflecting on the year was out of the question.

Back to January, the girls are back at school, the decorations are down and packed away, I’ve eaten practically enough food to feed a small nation, my husband is in his studios upstairs squirrelling away with some Pro Tools upgrade and the dog has been walked to the point of exhaustion. Now, finally, I can sit at my desk and look forward to what this year has in store. Looking back on many of the shoots from 2015 has a multi purpose. Initially, I get that warm fuzzy feeling as I remember pivotal moments and scenes, but next I get the projection of “how can I improve this?” and “how can I grow from this?”

Rather than setting resolutions where you “give something up” for New Year, I want to voice my hopes and aspirations while setting myself some challenges. If you are reading this I am making myself accountable to you. So, here goes…..Being Inspired for 2016…I’ll keep you updated along my journey!

Family portraits Bognor Regis

I would love to take more pictures of my family. My iPhone, although regularly out taking a snap, just doesn’t cut it. My DSLR comes out for special occasions (maybe I’m too precious with it!) but I would really like to treat myself to a great quality compact/bridge camera to keep to hand or in my handbag so I can just whip it out whenever to capture my nearest and dearest through their adventures. For the techies out there, my beady eye is on the Fuji X100T system. Mmmmmmm, hello!! A bit more saving, and a bit more research, I’m hoping to make 2016 the year for it….and not get so bogged down with the household chores that distract me from photo taking!!

Newborn photography Bognor Regis

As a Photographer in Chichester I’ve been loving getting more into Bump to Baby shoots this last couple of years, my prop collection is growing, my baby-sleeping timings getting better and my shoot to wee ratio is getting smaller (some babies make up for this though!!). I also came 2nd in a maternity photo competition for Twenty 20 (see the pic here). Some things that are inspiring me for 2016 are: To become more creative with my styling and improve upon my prop collection; Provide more photo books…I use Graphistudio for all my photo books, they have launched a great product called the Baby Book, it is the perfect sized keepsake to add to the photographic collection of a family after they welcomed their new addition. It saddens me to hear about all these wonderful images people have that never see the light of print, instead gathering dust somewhere on a USB stick or disk in a drawer. N.B. The bumps do exist, I tend not to share these publicly however as many of the mums-to-be are in a state of undress they may not want the world to see! I have a select few on my portfolio should you wish to see.

Wedding Photography Chichester_0003

By now you should know I LOVE WEDDINGS!!!! I have been really lucky to have met some great couples who have wanted to experiment and push the boat out creatively for their collection of images. I would love to do this more! I love using Pinterest, photography magazines, blogs to keep up with current trends and new ideas and techniques. I am inspired for 2016 to be a year where I can really grow in my creativity at weddings. From the early stages of getting ready, to the ceremony, following on to the portraits and the evening’s party. I strive to improve my technicality, my equipment and general photo taking every step of the way. I hope to attend more wedding photography workshops this year and seminars presented by the leaders in the wedding photography field. Not only are they great fun to attend, I always return with a wealth of new knowledge that I am eager to practise!

Wedding Photography Chichester_0004

Lat year I was accepted as a Provisional Member of 2 professional photography associations: The British Institute of Professional Photography and the Master Photographers Association. This in itself was a proud moment for me as only approximately 30% of applicants are accepted! I have attended workshops, met new people and been very inspired! This is the year I hope to achieve my first qualifications with them. There are 3 levels: Licentiate; Associate; Fellow. I hope to have passed my “L” in both this year (and learn to pronounce it!!). A bonus will be that achieving this will go towards a BA in Photography too. Some of the images above I hope to use in my submission for qualification, my genre being Wedding Photography. The hardest part I am imagining (after the picture taking of course) will be learning how to self-critique at a high level, constantly seeking even the most minute details to improve upon… then learning when to stop!! Oh, and writing the actual submission. That will also be a challenge, but an inspired one, I hope.

Band Photography Chichester_0005

I am really fortunate to be married to my husband. He is a bloody good chap!! He is also a very talented musician and music producer…because of this, he often gets me involved if he needs something visually creative. I have been involved in music videos, from the stunningly simple to the ridiculously complicated; Photo shoots for promo’s and websites, tours and publicity, and, public events that need documenting. I’m a lucky girl!! I have met some amazing bands and artists who inspire me with their music, their craft and their passion. I can’t wait to get my teeth into the new artists that will walk through the door this year and provide a visual service that compliments their audio one!

This is quite a lot to think about and focus on this year, and there will be more I’m sure! I love making lists, it really helps me to focus on what I need to do, when and how, so this blog will serve me as my list of how I hope to be Inspired for 2016. I can’t wait to check things off the list and update you as I achieve some of my challenges and realise my hopes.

Happy New Year everybody, and be Inspired for 2016!!

Family Portrait Photography | Bognor Regis

Zainab and I had talked about getting her family together for a photo session for some time. Finally, in May we managed to pin down a date to get them in the studio in Bognor Regis for a family portrait photography session.

Family Photography Bognor 220

This was not going to be a quiet affair. With 3 sons, each of whom seemed to travel the ground in their own whirlwind of energy I needed to find the balance between a fast enough shutter speed to catch them, and one slow enough to let in the flash of the studio lights!

Family Photography Bognor 34

Zion, Zebedee and Ziggy (L-R) were hilarious to get to know…cheeky, active, funny, not at all shy about posing…. and in Ziggy’s case a keen escapologist! Not even the confines of the studio door could keep him in!

Zainab & Family 94

Zainab and her husband Nii had come prepared with a variety of clothing props….the main challenge was to get them to pause from the fun they were having to get dressed! There were traditional Ghanaian robes, football kits and the boys own choice of outfits. It certainly made for colourful photography for their family portrait.

Family Photography Bognor 123

Family Photography Bognor 129

The boys laughed and danced with each other enormously, this was a family who were very comfortable laughing and having fun together….it was so good to see! I’m sure no one came to any harm as their constant bundles ended in collapse!

We tried very hard to get the family to stay somewhat still and engaged with the camera in some group photos, but when there are bundles to break and mischief to find it was a tough one, but so much fun! (N.B. no one was hurt in the picture below!!)

Family Photography Bognor 169

With a moment of calm, I managed to capture a few portraits….but hopefully what really has been photographed is the fun energy that this family have in abundance!

Hopefully I will see more of these guys in the future for another family portrait photography session….in the mean time I think I would need to stock up on high locks for the doors to keep Ziggy in and double sided gaffa tape for the floor to slow the boys down a touch!!

Newborn Photography | Rose Lorena | Findon Valley

It was so nice one evening to get a message from Laura about doing a newborn baby portrait photography shoot for her new addition, Rose. I knew Laura from many years ago when she was a young girl as I had worked with her dad. What a joy to see how she’d grown up into a beautiful young woman with a baby girl of her own.

Newborn Baby Photography 45

Baby Rose was going to be 5 weeks old when I was booked in for the shoot, which is usually a little old if you want those cutesy-sleepy posed shots, but as she was born 5 weeks early I was hoping we may still catch some of that newborn-state sleep!

Newborn Baby Photography 25

There are some tricks of the trade to keeping a newborn baby in a malleable, sleepy state for portrait photography which I shared with Laura, but as Rose was becoming more aware of her surroundings at times we discussed going with her flow instead for the shoot. We needn’t have worried. Rose was a dream…..in fact, she was dreaming…..the entire 3 hours!!!

Newborn Baby Photography 49

Newborn Baby Photography 117

I had set up my portable studio and various posing pods in their home in Findon Valley, we had coffee to hand and an ultra warm room to help keep Rose nice and toasty. Laura had some lovely headbands made by a friend (who works by the name of All Han Made) and an array of outfits at the ready which Rose modelled beautifully. We even managed to capture a few surprise smiles!

Newborn Baby Photography 41

Little Rose’s cousins also popped in for a quick pose together, I’m sure she would have enjoyed the cuddles had she not remained resolutely asleep!! We even managed to convince her parents Laura & Rob to come in for a few shots. By this time the session was drawing to an end and yet Rose had not woken. What a perfect sleepy model.

The final step of this newborn photography shoot after editing the images was to design the album. For this I use an Italian company called Graphistudio with an album aptly named The Baby Book. With a soft touch box and book cover it comes with a variety of paper options. I chose the photographic paper with a high gloss finish for a contemporary look. A lovely keepsake of your most important treasure.

Family Photography | Bognor Portrait Shoot

I was contacted recently by a friend of mine trying to arrange a surprise present for her husbands 40th birthday. She wanted to create some photographs of her recently expanded family, so we booked in a family photography session in Bognor.

Chichester family photography

I had captured Cooper and Rafferty a couple of years ago at a toddler group photography session, but now that Edison had been born, their family photography needed updating. It was a great opportunity to get the boys into the studio for an hour rather than a quick 5 mins in a portable set up. It also meant I got to have some cuddle time! I just love a squidgy new baby!!

Chichester newborn photography chichester family photography

Sophie came well prepared, a massive feat with two busy boys and a baby less than 2 months old! I usually advise a change of clothes and some props…the boys chose so well, even baby Edison got involved in the swordplay!!

chichester family photography

I try to encourage children to play as much as possible so the images created are natural, capturing the personalities on display, here’s some outtakes of the boys as they got more comfortable in front of the camera!

Sophie had planned to create a triptych of photographs using blackboard written messages. The studio, as well as being white has access to various coloured roll down backdrops so we were able to play with some low key black and white photography too. Here’s some cheeky ones as they practised their posing (and handwriting)….

The boys were brilliant, such fun to photograph, full of energy and cheekiness, I can’t wait to see how Edison grows and develops into this lovely family.
